Haitian
Women Protest Lack of Aid Democracy Now, February 10 Watch Video (59:05) (Coverage starts at 2:59) As the death toll was revised, dozens of Haitian women held a protest Tuesday calling for speedier aid. Marching in the capital Port-au-Prince, the women carried signs reading “We need food” and “We need tents.” [Note: Signs also said: "End UN Racism" and "Tents not Guns". A banner of the "January 12 Movement to Liberate Haitian Women" includes call for a "Revolution for the whole nation." This protest, on February 8, was described as the "second demonstration" by the "12 Janvye Mouvman Fanm" on the Millennials Project Facebook page. Their first protest march -- on February 5 -- involved 500 women who walked to the MINUSTAH (UN military occupation force) headquarters and the US Embassy to demand “Tents, not guns!” |
On Feb. 9, the "January 12 Movement to Liberate Haitian
Women," again with the Millennials Project’s support, staged a sit–in on the
Champs de Mars outside the Plaza Hotel, where CNN had been staying. About 50
demonstrators held signs reading “Tents Now, Politics Later” and “End U.N.
Racism.”
The two groups have initiated plans for another demonstration in Port-au-Prince to be held on March 8, International Women’s Day. Women’s organizations from around Haiti have been invited to help organize the event, which organizers hope will bring out thousands of women from around Haiti and its capital. |
