The New Face of Terror in Afghanistan:
Electing Warlords, Drug Barons and World-Bank Pirates
The upcoming issue of Press for Conversion! (issue#59) will examine the new, so-called democracy in Afghanistan and will highlight a litany of controversies and scandals surrounding the electoral process that has occurred since the US launched its massive aerial bombardment in October 2001.
Many Afghan people and organizations are understandably discouraged that the US-led "regime change" has succeeded in replacing one a set of murderous, fundamentalist warlords (the Taliban) with another (the Northern Alliance).
While Canadian governments (both Liberal and Conservative) have lavishly praised their own efforts at installing this so-called fledgling democracy in Afghanistan, they have diligently ignored the fact that corrupt elections--complete with intimidation and vote buying and vote rigging--have enthroned in Afghanistan's halls of power a coterie of murderous warlords, drug traffickers and World Bank-inspired, corporate pirates.
