Conscience Canada
Conscience Canada (CC) is working to allow Canadians to redirect their military
taxes to peaceful purposes. Since the Canadian government supports the
rights of conscientious objectors to not serve in the military it should allow
people to divert that portion of their taxes that goes to the military. CC
is working with NDP MP Svend Robinson on a Private Member's Bill to establish a
peace tax fund. Here's how you can be a Conscientious Objector to "fiscal
conscription:"
1. Complete your Income Tax Form down to Balance Due.
2. Go back to Net Federal Tax line. Calculate 7.44% of that amount.
3. Write a cheque for this amount to Conscience Canada Peace Tax Fund in Trust,
and send it to Conscience Canada. Make two copies.
4. Write to Finance Minister Paul Martin, indicating that you have directed the
military portion of your taxes to the Peace Tax Fund in Trust.
5. Send the following to your local Tax Center: your completed Income Tax Form,
your cheque to the Receiver General for the Balance Due - less the amount of the
step #3 cheque, a copy of the #3 cheque, and a copy of your letter to the
Minister.
6. Send the original letter to the minister and a copy to CC.
7. Send other copies of your letter to the following MPs; Stockwell Day, Leader,
Canadian Alliance party; Gilles Duceppe, Leader, Bloc Quebecois; Alexa
McDonough, Leader, NDP; Joe Clark, Leader, PC party; Svend Robinson, MP, and
your own MP at House of Commons, Ottawa ON K1A 0A6.
CC will refund your cheque at any time with interest earned.
