Homes not Bombs
Homes not Bombs (HNB) is a loose-knit grouping of individuals
and groups across Ontario who believe Canada should build homes, not blow them
up. The network uses a combination of education, vigils and nonviolent direct
action.
HNB's first major action was to convert the War Department
into the Housing Department, in November 1999. Fifty four people were
arrested for constructing a house, daycare, community garden, free school and
women's shelter at the "Department of National Defence."
HNB has campaigned against militarism and for affordable
housing since late 1998. HNB organized a civil disobedience action at the
Hamilton war show, where 22 people were arrested for singing, praying and trying
to enter the show to inspect warplanes for violations of international law.
HNB also organized an attempted occupation of historic Fort
York Armoury after the military kicked out the homeless people who were staying
there. HNB's Campaign to Demilitarize Canada will focus on local military
industries like Diemaco in Kitchener. Diemaco is Canada's Centre for
Excellence for Small Arms and the recipient of hundreds of millions in tax
dollars. It produces rifles, machine guns, grenade launchers and missile
parts. HNB hopes to reach out to like-minded groups across Canada to focus
on ending war training, military production, war shows and to convert the War
Department into a true peacekeeping and civic society institution.
