Peace Brigades International - Canada
Peace Brigades International (PBI) Canada is a grassroots organization exploring
and implementing nonviolent approaches to peacekeeping and support for basic
human rights. Founded in Canada in 1981, PBI sent its first team to
Guatemala in 1983. PBI is currently working in Indonesia/East Timor,
Mexico, Colombia and the Balkans. PBI volunteers accompany activists in
their daily activities. Such unarmed accompaniment offers protection to these
activists who are targets of repression for their work. Governments often
cease human rights violations because they wish to avoid negative publicity and
possible international sanctions.
