War Resisters' International
Originally founded in 1921, War Resisters' International (WRI)
is a network of pacifists and nonviolent activists on every continent, who work
on national, regional and international levels, as well as in local communities,
to end war and the causes of war.
WRI is first and foremost a communication and information
link but we also build support campaigns for individual objectors and anti-war
groups that come under attack for standing up for their beliefs. We also
promote active nonviolent strategies for transforming militaristic societies.
WRI members believe that:
? War is never the way to solve conflicts, that it serves to
perpetuate cycles of violence and hatred.
? The cycle of war and violence can only be broken when
people refuse to participate in the institutions of war and militarism.
? We have to build alternatives to the systems and
relationships of domination which lie at the root of war.
? Nonviolence and nonviolent direct action can be powerful
forces for transforming society.
WRI has an extensive network of members in 40 countries including: Gandhian
teachers in India, anti-war campaigners in former Yugoslavia, young men in
dozens of countries who refuse military service, war tax resisters in a dozen
more, peace researchers, nonviolence trainers, those working against rape and
racial attacks and those protesting nuclear testing. WRI co-produces Peace News,
a monthly newspaper on nonviolent actions around the world. For over 60
years, Peace News has promoted pacifist and nonviolent thinking and action.
Its editorial objectives are to:
* Support and connect nonviolent and anti-militarist movements around the world.
* Provide a forum where such movements can develop common perspectives.
* Take up and promote issues suitable for international campaigning.
* Promote pacifist analysis by testing assumptions against contemporary events.
* Promote and give critical support to nonviolent revolution.
