The word "defense" is therefore something akin
to a weapon used in a linguistic war of words being fought to influence or
control the way we think about war, the corporations that manufacture war
technology and the warfighting institutions that use that technology.
Of course “defence technology" actually refers
to a whole panoply of weapons, weapons systems and other military
technologies that can just as easily be used in "offensive" manners.
