Two Radio Shows (May 18 & 19) focus on Opposition to
Canada's Largest Arms Trade Show, coming to Ottawa
in late May

Canada's arms trade and the growing opposition to the CANSEC military trade show coming to Ottawa (May 27-28)  will be the subject of discussion for an hour this week on CHIN RADIO 97.9 FM Ottawa.

On Monday, May 18th and Tues. 19th the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) show hosted by Solicitor and Mediator, Ernie Tannis, will feature four guests to talk about Canada's military exports and the campaign to oppose CANSEC 2009.

CHIN Radio Ottawa is a multicultural radio station broadcasting in over 20 languages. The ADR series was awarded the best national radio program in the "features" category 2007 by the Canadian Ethnic Media Association and (for 2nd. year in a row) in the "opinion" radio category for 2008

A representative of the military industry association organizing the CANSEC arms exhibition has been invited to participate in a future radio program (date to be announced) to discuss these issues with Richard Sanders, Coordinator of the Coalition to Oppose the Arms Trade (COAT).

On this week's shows
Richard Sanders, co-ordinator of Coalition to Oppose the Arms Trade (COAT) provides this background information:
"Thanks to a City of Ottawa ban on leasing municipal property to military trade shows, no such arms exhibitions have been held on City property for 20 years. Until now!  Thanks to a legal technicality, 200 of Canada's largest  war-related industries will be flogging their high-tech wares at Lansdowne Park on May 27-28.  Many peace and religious groups have come together to oppose this manifestation of the international weapons trade and to raise public awareness about Canada's role as the world's 7th largest military exporter."

This week's guests:
RICHARD SANDERS, coordinator of the Coalition to Oppose the Arms Trade  (COAT) and editor of COAT's magazine, Press for Conversion!  <coat.ncf.ca>

MURRAY THOMSON,  a Quaker, co-founded Canadian Seniors for Social Responsibility, Peace Brigades International, Project Ploughshares and The Group of 78.

ABDUL RASHID, a leading member of Ottawa's Muslim community, the Christian-Muslim Dialogue and chair of the Capital Region Interfaith Council.

BRENDA VELLINO, a Carleton University English professor and Buddhist committed to non-violence, is a longtime activist in anti-war, anti-globalization and solidarity movements.

The peace education and action campaign to oppose Ottawa's military trade shows includes:

* An all-day peace vigil on May 27 outside the Bank Street gates of the CANSEC 2009 arms show at Lansdowne Park.
