Then, Prime Minister Martin, referring to BMD as a US means to “defend itself and its people,” which it is not, said:

“Canada will not take part in the proposed [BMD] system.”

But again, there was nothing about what this actually meant with regards to all the ways in which Canada was already taking part.

The media immediately began repeating these official pronouncements without critique, as if they were the clear, simple and absolute truth.
As if these decrees needed no verification with facts on the ground. And so, that was it, it was pretty much all over.

However, the official and loyal opposition, the Conservative Party, didn’t fall for the government’s PR.
