NATO

In March 2005, just two weeks after Canada’s supposed rejection of “missile defense,” the media all-but-ignored a NATO announcement that it was building its own “deployable Theatre Missile Defense capability to give protection to troops against incoming missiles.”

NATO had already been doing R&D and practising TMD for at least 10 years and Canada was among a handful of NATO members leading that charge.

In particular, efforts have long been underway to build technological and human interoperability among NATO’s most militarily powerful members. We shouldn’t be surprised that this select group includes Canada.

This NATO effort focuses on using the latest air- and space-based sensor systems for finding ground targets. Canada is providing the world’s only space-based radar satellite, called RADARSAT. This has been a highly-coveted dream of US warfghters for decades and it has even been compared to the “Holy Grail.”
