Now here he is Mr. White Hat himself, the world’s most powerful man, saying to the American people and indeed the world on September 20, 2001:

"You're either with us, or you are with the terrorists.”

It’s pretty simple. There’s the good guys with the white hats over here and the bad guys with black hats over there, the ones that Canada’s Chief of Defence Staff called “detestable murderers and scumbags.” Our job is to kill them and, I guess, as long as they keep wearing those black hats we’ll no who to kill.

But of course, reality sometimes gets in the way. There are lots of grey areas, though perhaps not so much grey matter, in the strictly black and white confines of the Manichean brain.

Sometimes black is white. Remember the Newspeak slogans from Orwell’s 1984?

“War is peace, ignorance is strength, freedom is slavery.”

But try telling that to state terrorists. You might end up dead.
