The end goal of this US game was to destroy the Soviet Union.  Osama and company were used as pawns to draw the Soviets into a trap.
 
By early 1979, Carter was financing, arming and training the mujahideen.
 
Then for at least six months, Afghanistan’s PDP government begged their Soviet allies to rescue them. When -- very reluctantly – in December 1979, Soviets troops were moved into Afghanistan, the world denounced it as an invasion.
 
To justify this game of trickery, Brzezinski later said:

“What is most important … the Taliban or the collapse of the Soviet empire? Some stirred-up Muslims or … the end of the cold war?”
