This UN graph shows Afghan opium production since 1980.
 
In 2001, the Taliban had almost eradicated opium production bringing it down to “Soviet period” levels of the early 1980s.
 
But right after the US-backed regime change, production bounced right back up.
 
And, it is estimated that 2006 levels will be 50% higher than in 2005.
 
So, why are we there?
