1980.
In 2001, the Taliban had almost eradicated opium
production bringing it
down to
“Soviet period” levels of the early 1980s.
But right after the US-backed regime change,
production bounced right
back up.
And, it is estimated that 2006 levels will be 50%
higher than in 2005.
So, why are we there?
