New COAT Research

Canada's Military Exports to
the
Middle East and
North Africa
Inspired by popular revolutions and protests throughout the
Middle East and North Africa, the Coalition to Oppose the Arms Trade
(COAT) has amassed a wealth of information on Canadian military exports to
the region. Using data culled from various government and industry
sources, COAT has produced dozens of data tables exposing Canadian arms exports to the
region.
For decades, Canadian governments --
Conservative and Liberal alike, while preaching peace and human
rights -- have facilitated the steady flow of arms, ammunition, tear gas,
battle vehicles, military explosives, and much much more, to numerous
repressive, undemocratic governments in the Middle East, North Africa and
elsewhere. Canada is thus deeply complicit in aiding and abetting
many U.S.-backed regimes that must rely on brute force to retain power.

This database provides information on more than 200 Canadian military
industries that report having "export experience" to governments in
the region (plus those "actively pursuing" such exports).
Click each company name to find out details about the company, such as the military products
that they manufacture.

Canadian Exports of Armoured Fighting Vehicles
to the Middle East
and North Africa
This
table shows the exports of Canadian military vehicles worth almost $1.9
Billion to eleven countries in the region between 1990 and 2010.
Most of the exports were to Saudi Arabia, where all protests have now been
banned, although there were sizable exports, worth about $40 million, to
Egypt, Iraq and the UAE. (Source: Statistics Canada, using customs
data from the Canada Border Services Agency)
