DRS Technologies, of Carleton Place, near Ottawa, builds a Naval Infrared Missile Defense System called SIRIUS. This sensor detects the launching of Theatre Ballistic Missiles (or TBMs) from hundreds of kilometres away, and can detect them hitting the atmosphere at an altitude of about 70 km.
This makes SIRIUS extremely useful for targeting missile defense weapons.
Since 1995, the creation and development of SIRIUS has been funded by the Canadian and the Dutch governments, for use aboard Canadian, Dutch and German warships. Canada estimates that it will have spent about $270 million on SIRIUS by 2009.
Mark Newman, the companys CEO notes that it is a key supplier of systems for missile defense that are critical for Canadian and allied international fleet operations.
Canada is purchasing SIRIUS for possible use in US-led, missile defense operations.
At least three of our governments Defence Research and Development Canada facilities have worked on SIRIUS.
