Myths are
cultural lenses that get between us and the world. They inflict cultural
programs upon us that hypnotise us and take us prisoner. As captives of this
cultural programming, we cannot perceive them.
Just as we cannot hear our own accents, we can’t recognise the biases
instilled by our national myths.
To unlearn
or unbrainwash ourselves we must first know that they exist. Then we
must learn to recognise the illusions that are imposed on us by linguistic
straitjackets.
This is what
I call the Zen and the Art of Peace Activism, or the Tao of Peace Activism.
What are
“linguistic straitjackets”?
