The "Secure Canada 2008"
Official Weapon System of the Week

During the six week campaign against Secure Canada, the Coalition to Oppose the Arms Trade had a weekly feature highlighting a weapons system that is manufactured, in whole or in part, by an exhibitor planning to attend "Secure Canada 2008."

(1) "B-2 Spirit" (Boeing), (2) "Predator B" (General Atomics), (3) "Overhead Remote Control Weapon System" (Israel's Elbit Systems), (4) the "Multi-Launcher" (sold by Tactical & Survival Specialties, Inc.), (5) "Fire Control Systems" (General Dynamics Canada), and (6) "Ballistic Missile Defence"  (Boeing and CAE Inc.)

Week 1:  August 2 to 9, 2008

In remembrance of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, it is appropriate that this nuclear bomber was chosen.

The B-2 "Spirit"
(Boeing)

Manufactured in large part by the good folks at Boeing, one of the proud exhibitors planning to flog their wares at the "Secure Canada 2008" arms exhibition, Lansdowne Park, Ottawa (Sept.30-Oct.1, 2008).

Coincidentally, each B-2 is worth US$2.2 billion, the same as the City of Ottawa budget for 2007!

Boeing, a proud "Secure Canada 2008" exhibitor, is currently working on the B-2's smart bomb rack and SATCOM radio. Boeing is also responsible for manufacturing the following major components of the B-2 nuclear bomber:

Thanks to Boeing's work on the B-2's weapons-delivery system, the B-2 is configured to "deliver" the following quantities and types of armaments:

NUCLEAR
16 B61
16 B83
16 AGM-129 ACM
16 AGM-131 SRAM 2

CONVENTIONAL
80 MK82
16 MK84
36 CBU87
36 CBU89
36 CBU97

PRECISION
8 GBU 27
12 JDAM
8 AGM-154 JSOW
8 AGM-137 TSSAM

Coincidentally, the average cost of each B-2 bomber is US$2.1 BILLION, which is the same as the City of Ottawa's entire budget for 2007!

Week 2

"The Predator B" (aka MQ-9 "REAPER")
(General Atomics)
This "hunter/killer" drone aircraft is brought to you by General Atomics (GA), another proud American war industry scheduled to flog its deadly wares at "Secure Canada 2008." GA is also one of "Secure Canada's" main corporate sponsors. Do you feel more secure yet Canada?

The Predator B is a variant of the MQ-1 Predator, which General Atomics says: "is the most combat-proven unmanned aircraft system in the world, providing continuous and persistent armed reconnaissance and battlefield support to ground troops." The Predator B can carry "a variety of weapons to meet its designated 'hunter-killer' mission requirements, carrying up to 3,000 pounds of external ordnance," including GBU-12, GBU-38 precision-guided bombs and Hellfire missiles. The Predator series has so far "logged over 300,000 flight hours with over 80 percent in combat." The predator series has been used in Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen and Yugoslavia.

Week 3

"Overhead Remote Control Weapon System"
(Elbit Systems)

Israel's Elbit Systems, a company scheduled to exhibit its deadly wares at "Secure Canada 2008," builds many weapons systems including the Overhead Remote Control Weapon Systems (ORCWS) 25-30. It is "a fully stabilized, dual-axis overhead unmanned turret system with 25 or 30 mm automatic cannons." As Elbit says:
"T
hese Weapon Systems represent an effective response to accurate shooting on the move with no exposure to enemy fire. Their unique design is based on extensive battlefield experience both in full-scale and low-intensity conflicts and attests to the Elbit Systems Group’s leadership in the field of Turret and Fire Control systems."
Learn more about Elbit's ORCWS here.

Week 4
"Multi-Launcher"
(For firing tear gas, rubber bullets, pyrotechnics, pepper spray, etc.)

(Tactical & Survival Specialties, Inc.)
For a mere US$3,660.20, this weapon can maim, blind, choke and cause various other forms of extreme pain and discomfort for groups of protesters. Used for "crowd control" in many countries, it is described as a "less than lethal" weapon. However, people have died from such "non-lethal" weaponry. Tactical & Survival Specialties, Inc., (TSSI) also sells hundreds of different kinds of munitions for this weapon including: 135 different kinds of projectiles (from rubber bullets and metal balls, to noxious foam and bean bags, etc), 47 different kinds of "Canisters & Grenades" (tear gas, rubber bullets, pyrotechnics, smoke, etc.), and 27 kinds of sprays and aerosols (pepper, mace, chlorine tear gas, other chemicals, etc), and 11 kinds of "Distraction Devices" (things that go "flash" & "bang" to intimidate and scare protesters).

TSSI began 25 years ago, "by supporting the United States Military Special Operations communities." They sell everything from commando knives to frogman suits, handgun silencers to sniper kits, batons and handcuffs to night vision equipment. Learn more about TSSI and the weapons and hardware it sells: Tactical & Survival Specialties Inc.

Week 5
"Fire Control Systems"
(General Dynamics Canada)

General Dynamics Canada's began making systems to control the firing of the weapons on the US Army's Abrams Main Battle Tanks in the early 1970s. GD says "At that time, the US Army determined that GD Canada was the only company in the world capable of designing and manufacturing the world's first fully digital Ballistic Computer System (BCS). The BCS...is the heart of the tank's fire control system, which also includes sensors, sight(s), and gun control equipment. Since that time, GD Canada has built over 10,000 BCSs..... GD-Canada provides fire control solutions for tanks, infantry combat vehicles, artillery, multiple-launch rocket systems, and mortars"

Week 6
"Ballistic Missile Defence"
(Boeing and CAE Inc.)
CAE is at the cutting edge of a global revolution in how weapons systems are created. Called “computational prototyping” or “simulation-based design,” this process flowered in the 1990s, thanks to advances in computer-aided design and digital imaging systems. Boeing, the world’s No. 1 prime contractor overseeing the development and manufacture of the entire “missile defense” weapons program is using CAE products to create, design, test, evaluate and develop “missile defense” weapons systems. (Both CAE and Boeing are exhibitors at "Secure Canada 2008"). CAE’s most significant contribution to Boeing’s “missile defense” weapons design revolves around three products, known as STRIVE, ITEMS and RAVE.
